Mrs. Beery was a premier ballerina, dancing with the Washington Ballet and active in the Stage Door Canteen in World War II. She operated the Lake Wales School of Ballet for many years. Before arrival in Lake Wales she traveled all over the world with her husband, Lawrence A. Beery, Jr., who worked with the State Department. She fostered goodwill by operating ballet studios wherever they traveled. Following her untimely death, the Lake Wales Arts Council received funds in her memory to establish the award.
